Friendly Potter

Dear All,

There is an SCA-friendly potter who lives in the UK area covered by the shire of Flintheath. She has been branching out into the Re-enactment market and has been very very receptive to requests even to the extent of going away and doing research. Several of us have placed commmissions with her for feast gear and she has proved reliable, at very reasonable prices and with good quality work. She has attended several ID events as a Merchant.

I recently asked her for something new (for her). I wanted a paint tray similar to that depicted by Boccaccio below. I also asked her if she could make a low-fired tray that would absorb moisture and help with the evaporation of hydrated powdered pigments. The second picture is what she has created for me. The total cost is around £20 or €25.

I thought that there might be several people who would want to have something specific made in ceramic-form (or personalised stuff like your arms carved or put on relief on feastgear, or other scribal aids like ink-pots) If anyone is interested in commissioning something from her, let me know and I will put you in touch. There are enough travelling SCA folk to make transportation relatively simple.

She actually has a lovely website, you can view Kate Phillips work at...

I was just there on Tuesday getting a tour of her studio and was lucky enough to be able to help her unload a cooled kiln! Fun!
